For eighteen years, Aldren Westfall has lived without the one thing everyone in Elariseth is expected to possess: an active Source. When Ironcrest Academy’s Classification Trial confirms the impossible once again, Aldren becomes the academy’s only Unbound student, belonging to none of its three Orders: Fang, Vein, or Rune. His combat skill earns him a provisional place in Fang, but his first night at Ironcrest brings something far stranger. He hears heartbeats through walls. A cut heals before his eyes. A flicker of aether answers his hand. And for one impossible moment, his eyes turn gold. While Aldren wonders whether exhaustion is playing tricks on him, the academy’s supposedly blank diagnostic begins producing three unexplained signatures. Whatever has been silent inside him for eighteen years is finally waking, and neither Aldren nor Ironcrest has a name for what he is becoming.
