The series begins with the "Great Siphon," a catastrophic event where the ruthless pirate warlord Derk strips the mountain planet X1980 of its core resources, leaving it a hollow, dying husk. The story follows Sylar and Liam, two young survivors who refuse to go quietly into the dark. Driven by a need for justice, they realize that two men cannot topple an intergalactic fleet. They must scour the far reaches of the galaxy to recruit five other specialists—each a survivor of Derk’s previous "liquidation" projects—to form a legendary strike team known as The Seven Guards.
