In the primordial era of the Mystic Realm of Ocrea, reality is not a firmament of stone but a Divine Canvas awaiting the brush. For eons, the Muralist Sects have maintained order by "painting" over existence with Pigment—a volatile essence distilled from human souls to manifest artificial suns and golden palaces. Yet, every stroke adds an entropic weight, thinning the fabric of the real and inviting the decay of the Fray. Phen is a "Scrubber," the lowest caste of the mystic order, tasked with cleansing spiritual soot. Unknown to the High Muralists, he is the Sovereign of the Void, wielding the power of Negative Space. While the "Heroes" of the Sects strive to saturate the realm with blinding color, Phen acts as the Hidden Hero, utilizing Sectional Erasure and Causal Bleach to subtract the catastrophes birthed by their vanity. As the Great Curator prepares to "optimize" the world by sanding it down to sterile stone, Phen must navigate the Sub-Canvas. To save the realm, he must endure the Eraser’s Tax, trading his own memories and physical definition for the power to keep the Canvas from tearing. Facing the Flesh-Sect, which utilizes blood as a regenerating pigment to outrun the Void, Phen remains the only force capable of revealing the "Ugly Truth" of the Primeval Grey.
