Kael Veyrin was born unable to command any of the Seven Currents, the elemental powers upon which kingdoms, noble Houses, and the greatest schools of magic have been built. In drought-stricken Fallowmere, that makes him an embarrassment in a world where magical strength decides status and opportunity. But when a dying child becomes trapped inside a spell that even trained healers cannot unravel, Kael discovers that his apparent weakness allows him to perceive something others cannot: magic does not simply end when a spell is cast. It leaves something behind, and something vital has been missing from the way the world understands it. His impossible success earns him a place at Auralis Academy, where gifted heirs wield powers Kael cannot hope to imitate. Yet beneath its rival Houses, ancient traditions, and celebrated masters lies a history that does not fit the lessons being taught. Forgotten ruins preserve impossible designs. Records have been altered or destroyed. Living magical networks are failing, fertile land is withering, and evidence of a deliberately erased process keeps returning. As Kael rises from the lowest ranks of Auralis, his greatest challenge will not be becoming stronger than the mages around him, but discovering why magic itself was changed. The Seven Currents are real—but they were never the entire cycle. Long ago, someone erased what magic was meant to give back. Now the consequences are spreading across the world, and Kael may be the first mage in generations capable of restoring the Eighth Cycle.
