In the village of Briar Glen, people leave offerings at the edge of the Blackroot Forest so the woods will spare them. They tell stories about the Hollow King, a dead ruler beneath the mountain who steals girls with silver in their eyes and makes them his queens. Eira has silver-flecked eyes. On the night of the Blood Moon festival, the forest answers her by name. She is taken beyond the trees and into a buried kingdom of sleeping halls, black rivers, and golden bones. There she learns the king is not simply a monster. He is a prison. And unless she breaks the ancient bond before the moon wanes, she will either become his queen… or the next lock on his tomb.
