A single, careless cut through a precious hide shatters Torin's last chance at a life beyond the tannery, igniting a bitter clash with his father over duty versus destiny. Haunted by his grandfather's heroic tales and the weight of a dented shield, Torin yearns for a life of meaning beyond the mundane, a life his father dismisses as a fool's dream. But with his future now irrevocably broken, the old man's shield becomes more than just a relic; it's a silent challenge, a call to forge his own path in a world that offers little but hardship. Can a boy who ruined his only opportunity find true purpose, or is he doomed to repeat the quiet tragedies of those who came before him?
