Naruto graduates from the Academy after years of failure and pranks. He forms Team 7 with Sakura and Sasuke. Kakashi tests them with the infamous bell test — a survival exercise designed to teach that those who abandon their comrades are worse than scum. After initial selfishness and failure, the team learns to work together (sharing food while tied up), and Kakashi officially passes them. Episodes 6–8 (Land of Waves Arc begins): The team takes their first real mission — a seemingly simple C-rank escort for Tazuna, a grumpy bridge builder from the poor Land of Waves. Tazuna reveals the truth: a ruthless tycoon named Gatō is oppressing his country, and powerful assassins are targeting him to stop the bridge that could free the islands. On the journey: They survive an ambush by the Demon Brothers (Hidden Mist chūnin). In the Land of Waves, they face Zabuza Momochi, the "Demon of the Hidden Mist" — a terrifying missing-nin wielding a massive executioner's sword. Zabuza traps Kakashi in the Water Prison Technique and sends a clone to kill the others. In a moment of pure fear, Naruto refuses to run. He clenches his fist until it bleeds and swears an "oath of pain" — vowing never to give up on his dreams or his comrades. Using clever teamwork (Naruto's Shadow Clones + Transformation, combined with Sasuke's Shadow Shuriken), they free Kakashi. The Copy Ninja then turns the tide using his Sharingan to copy and counter Zabuza's own water jutsu. As Episode 8 ends, Zabuza is defeated and on the verge of being finished off... but a mysterious masked hunter-nin from the Hidden Mist suddenly appears.
