After years of Ricki’s escalating delinquency ranging from school suspensions to legal trouble. Charles realizes his parenting has failed. Despite his fear of his mother’s judgment, Charles decides to send Ricki to Nigeria to live with his biological mother, Rita. In a rare moment of defiance, Charles confronts Mrs. Monroe, blaming her overbearing interference for ruining his relationship with Rita thirteen years ago and for turning Ricki into a "thug." He declares that Ricki is better off under Rita's discipline than continuing his downward spiral in the US.
