A cream-colored wedding invitation arrives, shattering David's carefully constructed world. It's from Rachel, his female college classmate he made a pact with years ago: if they were both single at forty, they would marry each other. He turned forty three years ago, and now she's marrying someone else entirely. As he stares at the name of a stranger in the invitation, Thomas Hale, a man Rachel never mentioned, David is forced to confront the comfortable distance he had always maintained with her. His publicist hails him as San Francisco's most eligible bachelor, happily married to his work, but the truth is far more complicated. With only a short amount of time until the wedding, David makes an impulsive decision, buying a one-way ticket to Portland. He knows he needs to see her, to understand, but what can he possibly say to a woman he pushed away, only to realize she was everything he ever wanted?
