The story takes place in a universe strictly stratified by power, known as the Verse of Ten Thousand Rivers. At the pinnacle sit the Divine Realms, bathing in the concentrated Qi of the cosmos. Far below, in the desolate fringes of the universe, lies the Azure Pebble Realm. It is a "Lower Mortal Plane," a world considered resource-poor and insignificant by the higher powers. Here, the laws of physics are merely suggestions, subservient to the cultivation of Qi. Children begin hardening their bodies at age five within their families, and at age thirteen, they face the ruthless judgment of the Sects. In this harsh world, we meet Jade. She is an orphan with no surname, no clan backing, and no resources. She is a servant of the Iron Mountain Clan, destined to live a life of invisibility, scrubbing floors and bowing to those with "spiritual roots." She is not a genius. She possesses no innate "Supreme Bloodline" or "Heavenly Bones." By the standards of her world, she is trashdestined to rot in the mud while others soar to the heavens. Her only tether to humanity is her dying grandfather, a senile old man who leaves her with a final, confusing gift: a dull, grey stone necklace shaped like a teardrop. He calls it a "chance to see the stars," a family heirloom that he failed to awaken.
