Beneath the Surface

For Jake, life is a constant calculation: his mother's diner wages against the mounting bills, a never-ending deficit that threatens to swallow their small family whole. He's tired of watching his mother break under the weight of their poverty, tired of the lies he tells to protect her, and tired of the math that always leaves them with nothing. When a seventeen-dollar school fee becomes the latest impossible hurdle, Jake decides he's done being the kid who just watches. He doesn't have a plan, only a burning resolve to change their fate, no matter the cost. But in a world where love and survival are intertwined, how far will a young man go to keep his family afloat?
