Old Ways of Doing Things follows Elias Ward, an archaeologist drawn to artifacts that refuse to obey history. When he uncovers an impossible pocket watch sealed beneath an ancient stone cairn, Elias is pulled out of his present and into a world where time is governed by forgotten rules rather than machines. He meets Ailith, a Keeper of the Old Ways—guardians who maintain time’s balance through ritual, sacrifice, and strict agreements forged at the dawn of humanity. Elias learns that time is not linear but layered, and that every change demands a price. As fractures spread across history, entire eras bleed together, revealing civilizations that never should have existed and futures frozen by control. The cause is the Chronarch, a former Keeper erased from history for trying to rule time rather than respect it. To stop him, Elias must participate in the Old Ways himself, paying with his own memories as currency. Each sacrifice erodes his past, forcing him to question whether preserving history is worth losing his identity. In the end, Elias makes the ultimate choice: destroying the watch that holds time together, stabilizing reality at the cost of being forgotten. Time survives—not controlled, not broken, but alive—while Elias lives on, changed, drawn forever to the ancient marks that still remember what he cannot.
