The first rule of the Outlands: never open the door after dark. Toby opened it. Two years after the dead rose across Utah, Wren Calloway and her oldest friend, Cole Ashby, have learned to survive on scavenged gas, hard-won silence, and a rule they never break. Until Toby Hale shows up. A quiet boy from their high school, Toby arrives carrying a rifle, a story full of holes, and something neither Wren nor Cole can afford to trust. Beyond their refuge, the Hollows hunt in the blistering Utah heat. The living are no less dangerous. Outside Salt Lake, an army has carved a fortress into an abandoned copper mine. The Quarry promises medicine, hot meals, and protection to anyone willing to sign its ledger. But those who refuse are thrown into the Pit. Now, with the dead closing in and the Quarry offering a salvation that feels more like a death sentence, Wren must decide who deserves her trust—and what she's willing to sacrifice to keep the people she loves alive. Because in the Outlands, the dead aren't always the ones you should fear. And some doors should never be opened.
