“Adam’s Journey” is a moving coming-of-age family saga that follows twelve-year-old Adam and his family as they leave their familiar middle-class life in Nairobi, Kenya, for the United States. When Adam’s father is awarded a medical scholarship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, the family uproots, trading the warmth of home for the uncertainty of a foreign land. But America is not the dream Adam imagined. While his younger brother Samuel — bound to a wheelchair yet brimming with wit and kindness — thrives in his new school, quickly winning over teachers and classmates, Adam struggles with loneliness, rejection, and the sharp sting of cultural displacement. His accent sets him apart, his attempts at friendship falter, and even the weather feels like an enemy. Meanwhile, his parents bear their own heavy burdens: his father crushed by the relentless demands of medical training, his mother stretched thin by long work shifts, financial strain, and the constant care Samuel requires. Their exhaustion weighs silently on Adam, who feels increasingly invisible in a family fighting to stay afloat. Themes of cultural identity, sibling bonds, resilience, and the quiet sacrifices of immigrant families pulse through every chapter. Adam’s journey is one of growth and heartbreak, but also of discovery — that even in the coldest places, warmth can be found in unexpected friendships, small acts of courage, and the strength of family ties.
