A baker’s life is simple: flour, fire, and the endless struggle to make ends meet. Zarela Ordan knows nothing of dragons beyond the tales her brother devours, until a mandatory visit to the legendary Hatching ceremony at Veyrhold pulls her into a world of ancient magic and royal intrigue. As the Crownspire trembles with the birth of new dragons, an impossible event unfolds: the three-hundred-year-old Black Relic, a dragon egg long dismissed as a rock, begins to crack. With every dragon in the realm bowing in reverence, Zarela finds herself an unwitting witness to a prophecy awakening, one that could shatter the very foundations of her world and bind her fate to a creature of unimaginable power. But what does a simple baker have to do with the King of Dragons, and what price will she pay for a bond that defies all understanding?
