On January 1st, 1891, 5,000 unaging beings known as the Elevated materialized across the globe, bound by two absolute laws: they cannot kill one another, and they must remain hidden from the mass of humanity. Vastly outnumbered, they cannot conquer; instead, they must influence. From the shadows of the Gilded Age, they weave webs of power through mortal governments and burgeoning industries, neutralizing rivals not with death but with eternal internment—entombed in concrete or drowned in oceanic trenches. To build lasting influence, they sire mortal descendants, creating slow-aging, mutated bloodlines destined to become dynastic instruments in their eternal game. The world is shaken every five years by a "Destruction Coil," a global conflict that amplifies an Elevated's power and grants its victor a single, precious exception: the right to execute one of their immortal peers. The story follows a loose alliance of ten Elevated, led by the pragmatic Bax and the idealistic Orin, as they navigate this treacherous landscape. They must build their power from the ground up, competing against ancient immortals who already command empires. Their struggle is a race against time, as the timeline hurtles toward 2010—the year the absolute laws are prophesied to dissolve, unleashing open war among the gods-in-waiting. Told through multiple, limited points of view, the narrative is a puzzle of perception, where every character's truth is colored by their ambition, paranoia, and history, forcing the reader to piece together the real conspiracy from a sea of lies.
