In a world ruled by fangs and fury, Maya was a princess without a wolf. Her pack’s cruel disdain and her father’s icy contempt cut deeper than any claw. Worthless. That’s what they called her. So she swore an oath through gritted teeth: she would carve out her worth by killing his oldest enemy, Alpha Venancio. If she succeeded, maybe her father would finally see her. Maybe the pack would stop laughing. Maybe the ache in her chest would finally stop. She abandoned the only home she’d ever known and hunted her father’s rival into the forbidden wilds. But the ancient woods weren’t empty. And Venancio had been waiting. He tossed the weapons onto the table, a sly smile cutting across his face. She stared into those gorgeous eyes — predatory, patient. The eyes of the man she was sworn to kill. Her ticket to being enough. "Your mission... your choice... the only condition is success," his baritone voice instructed. Her fingers twitched toward the blade. This was it. Her father’s voice rang in her head: Don’t come back without his heart. But doubt coiled in her gut. Could she do it? Was she just a wolfless fraud playing at war? "Who's the target?" Her voice barely held steady. She forced herself to look away from his eyes, afraid he’d see the war inside her. "The target..." He slurred the words, smoke curling from the cigarette in his hand. Then he leaned in, sharp stare pinning her, and whispered against her ear. "The target is... the person you want dead. Your innermost desire." Her heart slammed against her ribs. _Him_, her father’s command screamed. Kill Venancio. Be worthy. But another voice, smaller and treacherous, whispered: What if you want your father dead instead? The thought horrified her. Guilt burned her throat. "Anyone?" "Yes... anyone," Alpha Venancio repeated. Like he knew. Like he could see the fracture in her loyalty. "What about you?" The question tore out before she could stop it. A test. A confession. "Can I try to kill you?" A dark glimmer lit his eyes. His smile deepened, almost gentle. "You can try." Can a wolfless princess keep her vow when the enemy offers her freedom... and her own heart betrays her?
