In Valdremere, power is measured by the beast at your side, but twelve-year-old orphan Tam possesses only a blind, pale mudskink named Ember, the weakest creature in the kingdom. Yet, when Ember's skin cracks to reveal scales of banked embers and eyes of molten gold, Tam realizes his insignificant companion hides a legendary secret. Someone deliberately concealed this power, and now, as Ember awakens, a rusted sword whispers a chilling promise to the boy. With the Ashfang Clan seeking a weapon, the Orlaine Court vying for a throne, and the Silent Order of the Pyre desperate to silence what Ember's return signifies, Tam must learn to control a force that could shatter the realm. Every lesson comes at a cost, every new power brings a new enemy, and every victory makes the kingdom fear him more. Can a boy and his once-weak beast survive a world that wants them either controlled or destroyed?
