An Epic Fantasy of Magic, Monsters, and the Boy Who Defied the Impossible Every Soul has a limit. Every Giving has a purpose. Every life has a place in the world. For thousands of years, these truths have shaped the civilizations of a world where supernatural power determines everything from a person's future to the survival of entire kingdoms. At fifteen, every child dreams of Soulkindling Day. It is the day their Soul awakens, revealing the unique Giving they were born to possess and the Capacity that will determine how much supernatural power they can wield. Some awaken extraordinary abilities capable of bending the elements, strengthening their bodies beyond mortal limits, or manipulating the very forces of nature. Others receive modest talents that lead them toward lives as craftsmen, healers, scholars, merchants, or ordinary citizens. No two Givings are exactly alike. And once a Soul's Capacity is measured, its limits are believed to be permanent. That is the law upon which civilization has been built. For fifteen-year-old Lucian Williams, Soulkindling Day is supposed to be the beginning of everything. Born beyond the protective walls of Veyrhold, the magnificent capital of Caelora, Lucian has spent his entire life watching the world divide itself between those who possess power and those who must depend upon it. Within the walls stand magnificent estates, prestigious academies, flourishing markets, and heavily defended districts where the kingdom's most influential families live in comfort. Beyond them stretches the outer district. A place of hardworking families, crowded streets, struggling merchants, and communities that have learned to survive through determination and cooperation. It is a place filled with laughter, friendship, and people Lucian loves. It is also a place where the kingdom's protection is often stretched dangerously thin. When supernatural beasts descend from the wilderness, the difference between the wealthy and the poor becomes painfully clear. Those within the walls have trained soldiers, powerful defenses, and access to the finest healers. Those outside must sometimes survive long enough for help to arrive. Lucian knows that reality better than most. His father was a guard who died protecting the very people the kingdom was supposed to defend. Since then, Lucian has carried a promise in his heart. He will become strong enough to protect his family. He will become a Hunter. He will earn a place among the kingdom's finest warriors, explore the dangerous lands beyond civilization, and make certain his mother and younger siblings never have to live in fear again. And perhaps, one day, he will become powerful enough to change the circumstances that have shaped his entire life. Fortunately, Lucian has never been particularly good at accepting that something is impossible. He is clever, stubborn, athletic, and remarkably talented with a sword. His teachers recognize his potential, his friends believe in his future, and even his greatest academic rival acknowledges his ability. With his closest friend Cline beside him, Lucian has spent years imagining the adventures awaiting them once their Souls awaken. They dream of legendary battles, extraordinary abilities, dangerous expeditions, and the wealth that successful Hunters can earn. For boys who have grown up outside the walls, the future has never looked brighter. Then Soulkindling Day arrives. Across Caelora, crowds gather around magical projections to witness the kingdom's most promising young talents awaken. Families celebrate. Academies prepare their recruitment offers. The names of exceptional children spread throughout the capital. Among them is Gabriel, Lucian's brilliant rival, whose extraordinary talent seems destined to place him among the greatest of his generation. Everything unfolds as expected. Until Lucian steps forward. The measuring instrument examines his Soul. And reveals somethi
