He was worth nothing, by law. Then a Warden murdered his little sister, and the boy they called Zero did the one thing no Zero has ever done. He put his hands on the man and took his Worth. Pulled it right out of his skin. Because "Zero" was never the weakest class in Cairn. It was a cage. And Rook is the one thing the Ledger was built to keep from ever happening: a Hollow, who climbs by taking back what the powerful stole first. Now every officer in the city is a number waiting to be taken, and every bell in Cairn is ringing for his blood. Hunting him is Vesna, a devout Reckoner sworn to bring him in, certain she has found a monster, and carrying one more reason than her orders to want him caught. The higher Rook climbs, the colder he gets. Every Worth he steals burns away a piece of who he is. He can take this whole rotten city apart, number by number. The only question is whether there will be anything human left of him when he reaches the top.
