Sunny, a kid from the slums, walks into a police station to surrender himself, not for a crime, but for carrying the Spell—a mysterious affliction that turns the dying into monstrous Nightmare Creatures. Humanity's only hope lies with the Awakened, survivors of the Spell who gain miraculous powers. But for Sunny, with no family or resources, being chosen by the Spell is a one-way ticket to oblivion. Strapped into a chair, fighting to stay awake, he's told he must enter the Dream Realm, face his First Nightmare, and kill whatever illusions the Spell conjures. If he fails, a Nightmare Creature will tear through into their world, and he'll be just another casualty in a war no one understands.
