Freya Valthorn seeks to escape the collapsing empire. With no other choice but to sign on to a risky deal with the morose chieftain Erik Ironside, she signs on. Being pushed into an involuntary partnership, she and Erik head to the tempest-torn wilderness of the North. Though they are on the edge of the world, they must still begin to supply themselves and find a way to survive the elements. Their tentative partnership begins to slowly build and have an impact. However, the outside world interests with their disturbed tranquility.
