Core Premise The sky is not a dome of stars; it is a broken lantern suspended above the city of Nocturne, a sprawling metropolis built inside the ribcage of a dead titan. Every night, the lantern dims a little more. When it goes out, the titan’s heart (buried beneath the city) will restart, and the world will drown in its first and final pulse. The only thing keeping the lantern lit is soul-ember—the glowing residue left when a person dies with an unfulfilled promise. These embers are harvested by Lantern-Bearers, elite mourners who wear clockwork hearts to survive the toxic grief in the air. But the supply is running out: people have stopped making promises they can’t keep. The Protagonist Ezra Quill, 24, is the city’s youngest Lantern-Bearer and the only one born with a hollow heart—a void where a soul should be. He can’t produce his own ember, so he steals fragments from the dying. Each theft lets him relive their final promise in perfect detail… but it also rewrites his own memories, replacing them with the victim’s.
