What changed all of a sudden?" I asked, still confused by what was going on. At that time, I was working at the Summertimes Cafeteria in Brooklyn, and he had driven down to speak to me. "Did you really think he was going to marry you? You, a servant girl?" Raquel asked, stepping out from behind him. Raquel had been the high school it girl. She had always had eyes for Charles, but I never imagined he would actually leave me for her. "Come on, Kayla. Not in your world is that ever going to happen.
