In Eldervaine, a gothic medieval fantasy continent of feuding courts and old, hungry magic, Katerina is a vampire conqueror-queen whose beauty bends rooms and whose power could erase a continent, if she ever chose to stop being careful. She doesn’t win by romance or mercy. She wins by law. Her weapon is the Ruby Oath, a blood-binding ritual: defeated rulers drink a single drop of Katerina’s vampire blood and swear fealty aloud in a rite witnessed by court, witches, and stone. The land itself “hears” the vow, and the oath brands the ruler with a subtle crown-mark that binds their house and territory to Katerina’s rule. In Eldervaine’s rules, that drop does not turn them immediately. It becomes dangerous only if they die after drinking it. Death can make the blood “take,” warping succession into something undead and uncontrollable. With each conquest, Katerina patches and strengthens the Ruby Oath until it becomes a tightening net across the continent, turning politics into supernatural obedience. But unity has a cost. Something ancient beneath Eldervaine wakes, listens, and learns. An old force begins to imitate her systems, twisting witness rites and even mimicking her crown-seal. It births “hollow knights” marked by her law and uses her expanding oath-network as a pathway into the world, pushing her toward the one thing it wants most: a fully bound realm that can become a door. As priests and rival powers try to invalidate her rule by calling her mirror and her oath demonic, Katerina answers with ruthless governance, an Enemy Register, and accelerated conquest, starting with Ironvale, the forge-cantons whose iron can arm or starve every court. The only crack in her armor is kept carefully hidden: Seraphina of Viremont, a highborn woman she holds as a “protected guest” and secret intimacy, whose warnings about the church’s bone-keepers and the terrifying Hollow Law suggest the ancient force isn’t just attacking Katerina. It’s trying to wear her crown from the inside out.
