रमेश ने घबराकर फावड़ा कसकर पकड़ लिया। “आप… आप कौन हैं?” उसकी आवाज़ काँप रही थी। बूढ़े आदमी ने हल्की मुस्कान दी। “मैं इस धरती का रखवाला हूँ… और यह जगह सिर्फ उन लोगों को मिलती है, जिनके दिल में लालच कम और मेहनत ज़्यादा हो।” रमेश समझ नहीं पा रहा था। “ये… जगह है कहाँ? मैं तो अपने खेत में था…” बूढ़ा धीरे-धीरे उसके पास आया। उसकी लंबी सफ़ेद दाढ़ी हवा में लहरा रही थी, और उसके हाथ में लकड़ी का एक डंडा था, जिसके ऊपरी हिस्से पर एक चमकता हुआ पत्थर जड़ा था।
