In that very haveli lived the daughter of a poor farmer—Sugni. Sugni’s voice was so sweet that when she sang the folk song birha, the whole village would come to listen. Her voice carried so much pain that anyone who heard it would weep. When Vijayraj Singh heard her for the first time, he became infatuated with her. But Sugni rejected his vile intentions. Enraged, Thakur imprisoned her within the haveli.
